An organizational chart is a diagram that outlines the internal structure of a company and is the most common visual depiction of how an organization is structured. Organizational charts are visual tools used by managers to help illustrate the roles and an organization’s hierarchy. Whether you’re a business, nonprofit , or government organization, a chart can help your employees understand the chain of command, with clear information on which people report to which manager. A functional, top-down organizational chart reflects a traditional business structure. This structure shows the C-Suite at the top, followed by other senior management, middle managers, and so on. The structure is divided into traditional departments like IT, marketing, finance, human resources, and operations based on everyone's functional role in the organization. This type or organizational structure has fewer levels of middle management (less vertical hierarchy). An org chart for horizontal structure might focus more on product, process, and communication rather than on chain-of-command.
